Florida Gators vs Penn State: 2010 Outback Bowl Odds

Florida Gators vs Penn State: 2010 Outback Bowl Odds

ABC will televise the 2010 Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day between the Florida Gators vs Penn State Nittany Lions with a starting time of 1:00pm EST from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL. Online sportsbooks have opened with Florida as a 7-point favorite in college football odds vs Penn State with an over/under betting total of 48. The money line at sportsbooks has listed Florida as a -280 favorite in 2010 Outback Bowl picks and Penn State as a +240 underdog. The Capital One Bowl will also kick-off at 1:00pm EST on ESPN which will feature the remaining bowl games on January 1st; the Gator Bowl (ESPN2), Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl.

Penn State was something of a rebuilding team this year and finished 7-5 straight up and 5-7 against the spread in college football picks with 7 of their games going OVER the total. The Lions split their 8 Big Ten games and are considered by most handicappers to be a team with considerable upside for 2011 which is one of the reasons why 84 year old Joe Paterno is coming back as coach. Paterno proved he can change with the times as he started freshman Robert Bolden at QB which ended up in split time with Matthew McGloin due to injuries. McGloin actually had the better season with a 13/4 TD/INT ratio. Both are healthy and may see action in this one which is why Penn State is a slight underdogs in 2010 Outback Bowl odds. Evan Royster could clear the 1,000 yard mark rushing in this one as he has 916 yards.

Florida is playing their final game for coach Urban Meyer, who probably wishes that he would have stayed retired when he announced before last year’s Sugar Bowl that he was done, only to return. Florida struggled to find an offensive identity without Tim Tebow and finished 7-5 straight up and 6-6 against the spread in college football picks with an even 6-6 split on over/under totals. The Gators ranked 79th for total offense and 32nd for points allowed although 7th for total defense. Heading into Outback Bowl picks, Florida has paid out in 4 of their last 5 bowl games while the Nittany Lions are 2-6 against the spread in non conference action.

Miss State vs Michigan Wolverines: 2010 Gator Bowl Odds

Miss State vs Michigan Wolverines: 2010 Gator Bowl Odds

There will be plenty of intrigue when the Michigan Wolverines take on the #21 Mississippi State Bulldogs in the Progressive 2010 Gator Bowl in Jacksonville on New Year’s Day as Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez may be fired after the game. ESPN2 will telecast the bowl game starting at 1:30pm EST and online sportsbooks have opened with Mississippi State as a 3.5-point favorite in college football odds with an over/under betting total of 59.5. The money line at sportsbooks has opened with Mississippi State as a -170 favorite in 2010 Gator Bowl predictions with Michigan as a +150 underdog. Wisconsin vs TCU in the Rose Bowl can be seen at 4:30pm EST and Connecticut vs Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl at 8:30pm EST on ESPN.

Dan Mullen is coming off a breakthrough season in year 2 as the coach of Mississippi State as the Bulldogs finished 8-4 straight up and 6-6 against the spread in college football odds with 8 of their games going UNDER the total. MSU is somewhat limping into 2010 Gator Bowl predictions as favorites however with just 1 win and payout in their final 3 games of the season. State wins with old fundamentals as they rank 16th nationally for rushing and 27th for points allowed on defense. Michigan finished 7-5 straight up but just 3-9 against the spread in college football predictions with 7 of their games going OVER the total.

The Wolverines have clinched a winning season and bowl in Rodriguez’s third year on the job but it may not be enough to save his job. The defense was almost helpless in ranking 102nd for points allowed while the offense ranked 7th overall in the country and was highly exciting with QB sensation Denard Robinson who many times seemed to be an X-BOX character with his phenomenal game breaking ability. Heading into Gator Bowl odds as underdogs, Michigan has paid out in 6 non conference games but has covered just 1 of their last 7 games as an underdog. MSU has paid pout in 6 of their last 8 as a favorite. The Wolverines have gone OVER the total in their last 4 bowl games.

2010 Gator Bowl Predictions: Michigan Wolverines +3.5

Oakland Raiders 2010 Strength of Schedule, Futures Odds and Predictions

Oakland Raiders 2010 Strength of Schedule, Futures Odds and Predictions

The Raiders can’t possibly get any worse, right? Oakland finished 5-11 last season for its NFL-record seventh consecutive season with at least 11 losses, and the Raiders are 29-83 since losing to Tampa Bay in Super Bowl XXXVII.

But perhaps Oakland will have a little addition by subtraction this season after cutting loose overweight, unmotivated 2007 No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell, who could go down as the biggest draft bust ever. Last season Russell completed only 48.8 percent of his passes and had three touchdowns to go with 11 picks and a 50.0 rating. Oakland pulled the plug following a dismal Week 10 game against the Chiefs, although he did get into a few later games because of injuries to Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye. Overall, Russell earned an obscene $ 36 million and led the team to a 7-18 record as a starter.

The Raiders should have at least some stability at the position this year with former Redskin Jason Campbell, who came over from Washington for a 2012 fourth-round pick. Campbell started 52 games for Washington since being a first-round pick in 2005. He has thrown for 55 touchdowns, 38 interceptions and has a career passer rating of 82.3. That is absoulutely an upgrade over Russell. The Raiders were second to last in the NFL in scoring with 197 points last season and gained the second-fewest yards.

Oakland should have a solid defense, as the Raiders love 2010 first-round NFL Draft pick Rolando McClain, a linebacker from Alabama who should be in the Defensive Rookie of the Year running. Oakland also acquired former first-round pick Kamerion Wimbley from the Browns, and he had four sacks in the preseason win over the Bears. Plus Nnamdi Asomugha remains the best cornerback in the league not named Revis.

But these are, of course, the Raiders, and 2008 first-rounder Darren McFadden hasn’t been able to get on the field much in camp or the preseason because of a hamstring issue, pretty much handing the No. 1 running back job to Michael Bush. Last year’s first-rounder, WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, also has missed time with fatigue (fatigue?). Neither looks like they will live up to where they were picked. And up-and-coming receiver Chaz Schilens may need arthroscopic surgery on his knee that could put his status for opening day in jeopardy. Schilens had 29 catches for 365 yards and two touchdowns last season after missing the first eight games with a broken foot.

At least Oakland has one of the best kicking games in the NFL!

Many NFL odds have pegged the Raiders as a potential surprise team this year – not playoff-contention surprise but at least able to not lose double-digit games again. Oakland’s ‘over/under’ for NFL season win totals is 6. Let’s break down the 2010 Oakland Raiders schedule (all times Eastern):

Week 1: Sunday, Sep. 12, at Tennessee, 1:00 PM
Week 2: Sunday, Sep. 19, St. Louis, 4:05 PM
Week 3: Sunday, Sep. 26, at Arizona, 4:15 PM
Week 4: Sunday, Oct. 3, Houston, 4:05 PM
Week 5: Sunday, Oct. 10, San Diego, 4:15 PM
Week 6: Sunday, Oct. 17, at San Francisco, 4:05 PM
Week 7: Sunday, Oct. 24, at Denver, 4:15 PM
Week 8: Sunday, Oct. 31, Seattle, 4:15 PM
Week 9: Sunday, Nov. 7, Kansas City, 4:15 PM
Week 10: BYE
Week 11: Sunday, Nov. 21, at Pittsburgh, 1:00 PM
Week 12: Sunday, Nov. 28, Miami, 4:05 PM
Week 13: Sunday, Dec. 5, at San Diego, 4:05 PM
Week 14: Sunday, Dec. 12, at Jacksonville, 1:00 PM
Week 15: Sunday, Dec. 19, Denver, 4:15 PM
Week 16: Sunday, Dec. 26, Indianapolis, 4:05 PM
Week 17: Sunday, Jan. 2, at Kansas City, 1:00 PM

This schedule is rated right in the middle (T16) among NFL teams in opponents’ 2009 winning percentage of .500 (128-128). There are only four games against playoff teams.

This may not rank as the easiest schedule in the league it certainly looks like one of them when it comes to NFL picks. As bad as the Rams and Cardinals have looked in the preseason, it’s realistic to think Oakland could actually have a 2-1 September, probably losing at Tennessee (which is a 6.5-point favorite). And travel shouldn’t be a problem for this team as after playing at Tennessee, the Raiders don’t cross the country until Week 11 when they play at Pittsburgh.

The Raiders don’t play a divisional rival until Week 5 against the Chargers. And they don’t play any back-to-back games against AFC West opponents. Is this the year Oakland finally beats San Diego? The Bolts have won 13 in a row in the series, the longest active NFL winning streak by one team over another.

That Oct. 3 game against Houston likely starts three in a row against 2010 playoff teams, but then the Raiders – believe it or not – could go on a three-game winning streak. The NFL handicapping indicates they should actually be home favorites against the Seahawks and Chiefs and have won in Denver the past two years.

Probably the only legitimate road chance Oakland has after the bye comes in what should be the team’s lone cold-weather game, in K.C. But the Raiders have won there the past three years.

I love the ‘over’ 6 here because I don’t think there’s a chance that the Raiders do worse than a push. But I expect a 7-9 record and maybe even a second-place finish in the AFC West. Better things may finally be ahead for this team.

2010 Military Bowl Preview: East Carolina vs Maryland Odds

2010 Military Bowl Preview: East Carolina vs Maryland Odds

The Maryland Terrapins will play their final game for coach Ralph Friedgen as they take on the East Carolina Pirates in the 2010 Military Bowl at RFK Stadium in Washington DC. Kick-off time is scheduled for 2:30pm EST on ESPN and online sportsbook have opened with Maryland as a 7.5-point favorite in college football odds vs East Carolina with an over/under betting total of 67.5 for Wednesday’s game. Illinois vs Baylor in the 2010 Texas Bowl will kick-off at 6:00pm EST and Oklahoma State vs Arizona in the 2010 Valero Alamo Bowl at 9:15pm EST will also be featured on ESPN.

East Carolina has a record of 6-6 both straight up and against the spread in college football lines with 9 of their games going OVER the total. The Pirates covered just 2 of 6 road games this year. East Carolina is limping into 2010 Military Bowl odds as underdogs with 4 losses in their final 5 games including their last 2 games of the season. The Pirates regular season finale was a 45-38 overtime home loss to SMU. East Carolina has an impressive offense that ranked 12th nationally for scoring but the defense was near helpless and ranked 118th for points allowed. Maryland finished 8-4 both straight up and against the spread in college football odds with just 4 of their games going UNDER the total.

The Terps finished 2nd in the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division and Friedgen won the Coach of the Year award in the league but was fired anyway effective after this game. The Terps paid out in college football lines for 5 of their final 6 games of the season and ranked 41st for offensive scoring and 38th for defensive points allowed. East Carolina has gotten the money in just 2 of their last 9 non conference game including 1 of their last 6 against the Atlantic Coast Conference. Heading into 2010 Military Bowl odds, Maryland has been profitable in 4 of their last 5 bowl games. East Carolina has gone OVER the total in 4 of their last 5 games as an underdog. Maryland has gone UNDER the total in 4 of their last 5 bowl games.

World Cup Final 2010 ? Five referees to keep an eye on

World Cup Final 2010 ? Five referees to keep an eye on

Referee is not considered an easy job at all. At the World Cup Final 2010, FIFA has carefully chosen the list of 30 “black kings” to control matches in South Africa. Whenever the whistle is blown, any decisions affect the whole 90-minute match. The role of the referee is important enough to determine the fate of an entire game. Of course every choice is only relative and certainly there are not few mistakes from the referees in the world’s biggest tournament. Here are five referees who get special attention at the World Cup Final 2010.

1. Howard Webb (England)

In Europe, Howard Webb is a popular name to everybody. He had good control at Final Champions League between Inter and Bayern Munich and is working at the Premier League, a top European league. However, he is not regarded as a good referee of the world.

Howard Webb

Last year, Webb had a public apology after making a mistake in the match between Wolves and Birmingham at the FA Cup. Webb, whose main job is a police, did not recognize the 11m score of Birmingham. Therefore, Wolves won and played in the next round. At the same year, Webb continued to have a wrong recognition for the 11m score of Manchester United although goalkeeper Gomes didnot foul with Michael Carrick in the penalty area. The match ended with 2-0 score and MU won the championship.

2. Eddy Maillet (Seychelles)

On the world football map, the name Seychelles has almost no position. This 42-year-old man was recognized as an international-class referee after the match in the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009. Maillet controls the matches quite well and wins the hearts of fans.

Eddy Maillet

More impressive, the 42-year-old was picked to work the highly charged playoff between Egypt and Algeria in Sudan in November. However, Maillet comes from the tiny African paradise of Seychelles (population less than 90,000), which get much attention.

3. Jorge Larrionda (Uruguay)

Larrionda is not so popular in Europe but in every World Cup, “42-year-old black king” always makes great impression. In World Cup 2006, he controlled the draw match between U.S. and Italy. He is known as a brave referee when he sent three players off in the group game. (De Rossi, Mastroeni and Eddie Pope Paoblo). It was Larrionda who used a red card to send off Michael Bradley in the FIFA Confederations Cup semi-final in 2009 between U.S. and Spain. Bradley took ball on a 50-50 with midfielder Xabi Alonso. Fortunately, U.S. Still won with the score of 2 – 0 and lost Brazil in the final match.

Jorge Larrionda

Turn back time, at World Cup Final 2002, Larrionda was even banned to control the game due to unspecified irregularities. So how much red cards will this strict referee draw in South Africa?

4. Wolfgang Stark (Germany)

For the second straight season, Chelsea didn’t have much luck when it came to referees in the Champions League. Stark wasn’t as bad as Tom Henning Ovrebo, but he had a stinker in Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Inter Milan in March. Stark kept his whistle in his pocket when Branislav Ivanovic was mugged in the box at Stamford Bridge, and did the same as Walter Samuel manhandled Didier Drogba.

Wolfgang Stark

In 2007, at the U20 World Championships held in Canada, Stark continued to be the focus when he controlled the match between Chile and Argentina in the semifinal with 11 cards (nine cards to Chile including 2 red cards). Besides, he called 53 fouls, which was a record that year.

5. Martin Hansson (Sweden)

It was reported that Hansson took charge of the ill-fated playoff game between France and Ireland in Paris last fall and had a solid game through 90 minutes. He got the biggest decision of all wrong, allowing William Gallas’ decisive goal to stand after Thierry Henry’s hands. Ireland couldn’t believe it when Hansson failed to call Thierry Henry’s handball.

Martin Hansson

Not only Ireland but also England want to avoid Hansson. In the second round of the Champions League this season, the 39-year-old allowed FC Porto to take a quick free kick against Arsenal. Hansson didn’t exactly get out of the way as Gunners defender Sol Campbell tried to get into position, and Porto scored.

Moreover, Hansson was the referee in last year’s Confederations Cup final between Brazil and U.S. In this match, although Hansson controlled very well, he made mistake. When a header from Brazil’s Kaka against the U.S. crossed the line, it wasn’t considered a score. So how did Hansson get picked for South Africa?
