Werder Bremen will receive Dortmund at the Weser Stadion, in the 17th round of the German Bundesliga.
Bremen finished the previous year actually in style, as the team didn’t suffer defeat in previous five matches in Bundesliga, managing to exit the relegation zone as they now stand at fifteenth position, with three points more than play-out placed Hamburger SV.
However, they are far away from a safe side as the team need to continue performing well in order to remove the doubts about their salvation completely. They’ve taken ten out of sixteen points in front of own fans and know that they need to perform as good as possible in home matches. During the break, Werder Bremen played three matches not impressive a lot overall, as the team had 1:1 draws against Club Brugge and Karsruher, but lost in the most recent friendly match against Braunschweig 1:2.
Werder should be playing in 4-4-1-1 formation with Pizarro as number nine, while Kruse should be offensive midfielder just behind his back. Winter signing Thomas Delaney could make his Bundesliga debut in the midfield.
Dortmund, on the other side, could have ended the previous year in a bit better style, as the team ended their campaign with three draws in a row, staying to a point taken on the road against Koln and Hoffenheim, but also making a setback in their home game against Augsburg in a 1:1 draw in the most recent Bundesliga game.
After three draws in a row, Dortmund stands at sixth position only, which is three points below the third placed Hertha, but already twelve points behind first placed Bayern. On the other side, they are just two points above out of European places Augsburg and need to get back on the winning ways as soon as possible. Dortmund had three matches during the holiday break, showing some really good offensive performances as the team won over PSV 4:1, Standard Liege 3:0 and in the most recent one, winning over Paderborn 6:1.
Dortmund is set to play in 4-1-4-1 formation with Schurrle most likely as central striker, but also with massive help from Gotze, Castro, Kagawa and Reus as offensive midfielders. Central defender Neven Subotic remains long term absentee without performing so far now being unfit.
Werder is currently just three points above the relegation zone and need to continue their strong form as they can’t count much on points on the road. Therefore, I expect the home team to be pretty attacking, while Dortmund anyway remains a favorite here even though they are missing their star striker.
